The 2024 Electoral College map looks a wee bit different than the one you grew blurry eyed watching in 2020. Some states gained power, others lost. But, how are the number of each state’s Electoral College votes decided?
Short answer: population.
If your state grew over the last 10 years, you may have gained an Electoral College vote (and a Representative in Congress). If your state lost people, you may have dropped an EC vote.
Since 2020 , 13 states saw changes in their number of EC votes. Six states—California, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia—each lost one vote.
And seven states gained votes: Montana, Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, and Oregon each picked up one, while Texas came out on top with two additional votes.
